The history of the jews in Maramures begins in the 13th century and continues until our century. A large wave of jew immigrants from "Pays Galle" settles here towards the end of the 18th century, and the last great invasion come from Russia during the first world war. According to the 1930 census, in Maramures lived over 34000 jews representing 22% of the population in their areas. At the begining of their existence they were collecting taxes and had limited civil rights. In the period that follows they receive ample rights and become involved in their communities, becoming an important component of Maramures. Unfortunately the horrors of war hit the jews of Maramures, and in 1944 they were deported in nazi concentration camps. The few Holocaust survivors that came back to Maramures during the communist days immigrated massively either to Israel or North America. Nowadays jew communities are becoming fewer and fewer and the traces of their civilization are beginning to dissappear. Recently, the memorial house of Elie Wiezel was innaugurated. Born in Sighetu Marmatiei, survivor of the Holocaust, Elie Wiezel dedicated his life to the fight against hate, persecution and war, and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.
