Weavings and Adornments
Every component of the traditional costume in Maramures was created by local craftsmen. Made mostly out of wool, the pieces of the traditional costume - such as shirt, pants, scarf, belt, etc. are simple yet remarkably beautiful. Objects created for decorative purposes or for utility reasons, like towels, bedsheets, carpets, etc. are other highly appreciated creations of these popular artisans. The bed covers made in wool, dyed in vegetal colors according to an ancient secret recipe specific to this land, have made certain places like Sapinta and Botiza famous worldwide.

On top of these weavings come adornments, other local remarkable creations. Men use strangely shaped straw or feather hats to cover their heads. Lads use bright embroideries, pearls and flowers to decorate their own hats. Women use necklaces made out of small pearls and cover their heads with scarfs that vary based on the social status of the owner: brightly coloured for young women, sober colours for married women, and black for old women and widows.
