Monday
After breakfast, traditional arts classes begin.
They are designed for beginners’ and advanced
level and take place under the guidance of some
local artists. The subject-matters cover Maramures
music played on traditional instruments such as
the fiddle, the zongora and the doba, folk dances,
woodcarving, loom weaving, sewing and embroidering,
culinary art. The first day begins with the presentation
of audio/video materials from the collection of
the IZA POPELUC FOUNDATION, dwelling on the general
characteristics of Maramures traditional arts. The
students are taught how to tune up folk music instruments
according to the requirements of local music. The
morning session lasts until noon and is followed
by lunch and mid-day rest. The classes resume at
5PM–with the students’ individual practice
of songs and dances from the local folklore. Dinner
is served at 7PM. Dishes made up of farming products
are accompanied by horinca de Maramures. When mirth
has settled in the hosts enjoy it together with
the students. Classes continue: 9.30 to 12 in the
morning and 5 to 7 in the afternoon-for the remaining
of the week. In their spare time the students may
listen to audio materials from the Foundation audio
library, take walks in the countryside-to the neighbouring
villages, to the field where they can watch the
villagers work. Each student will be approached
differently by the instructor, according to his/her
level of knowledge. The students’ graduation
exam will consist of presenting a song, a dance
or of creating a piece of work.
Sunday
The students accompany the villagers to church to
attend the religious service. Lunch follows and
then the Village Dancing Party takes place at Ion
Pop’s gazebo, a great opportunity for the
students to display their newly acquired dancing
skills. When mirth has settled in again it will
not end until late in the evening.
Monday
After a late breakfast the programme ends and the
students say goodbye to their hosts and guides before
heading to Baia Mare. |
