As recognition of their value and uniqueness, in 1999 eight of Maramures' wooden churches were included in UNESCO's world patrimony protected by the institution. [1-4] [5-8]

1. Barsana (1720)
The church named "Holy Mother Entering the Church" is a nun monastery, displaying on its walls paintings by Hodor Toader and Ion Plohod, finalized in the year of the inauguration (1720).

2. Budesti (1643)
The church named "Saint Nicholas" harbours the armor belonging to the famous outlaw Pintea the Brave. Inside, there is also a collection of icons painted on glass in 1766.

3. Desesti (1770)
The church named "Ste. Paraschiva" has on its inner walls paintings representing biblical scenes. Their author, Radu Munteanu, painted them in 1780.

4. Ieud (1718)
The Church named "The Birth of the Holy Mother" is the most monumental of the old churches. The church is also known as the "gothic cathedral of Maramures".
